The
Atwood Community Center wanted a feasibility study of whether
to buy and renovate a church in their neighborhood. They knew
they needed more and to consolidate from four buildings to one
to support their growing programs.
Services
Van
Mell Associates provided comprehensive facility planning
that demonstrated that the church buildings would not
support the Center's long-term needs and that the Center
should and could have more and better space. VMA considered
the location dynamics of demographics, public transportation
and pedestrian traffic as well as space adjacencies
and image needs. A parallel fundraising assessment showed
that the community would be generous toward the right
project. This study was financed in part by the City
of Madison.
Results
The
study led the Center toward the remodeling of a 100-year
old factory which will not only meet the practical needs
of location and space use, but provide an image and
urban infill project that is already generating national
interest. The Center has raised millions of dollars
toward this incredible project.
